Organization Makes the Great Outdoors Accessible for Kids with Physical Disabilities
GRANDVILLE, MI: - Some kids are born with a physical disability that impairs their mobility and for others, it comes as an unexpected blow that drastically changes their life as well as their family’s. In either case, families can struggle finding ways for their kids to do things that others take for granted. Something simple like getting out into the woods can be near impossible in a wheelchair. It becomes all too easy to succumb to the ease of electronic devices and the comforts of staying indoors. But research shows that the health benefits of being physically active outdoors far outweigh those compared to the same activity indoors.
Hunt 2 Heal is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide accessible, safe and comfortable outdoor experiences to people with physical disabilities to improve mental health. Since 2021, the main conduit H2H has used is the sport of hunting. But if you’ve never hunted before or don’t come from a family of hunters, it can be overwhelming to get started.
Hunt 2 Heal is excited to host a couple of new events this year just for kids and their families.
Kids Day on May 13th, 2023 will introduce kids between the ages of 10-18 and their families to the possibilities that exist for outdoor adventures.
The event will be held in Bitely, MI (just a little over an hour from Grand Rapids) at the beautiful H2H barrier free lodge on 640 private acres of land. Families are invited to come try out different adaptive equipment and participate in some fun games and activities. Cruise around the woods in a track chair, learn about adaptive hunting, arts/crafts and more. In addition, a DNR representative will be on hand to talk about adaptive hunting, reps from the Michigan Disability Rights Coalition will be there with items from their Assistive Technology (AT) Lending Library and Hunt 2 Heal Staff and Volunteers will be there to facilitate the many activities. Registration is required, but is completely free to families.
More information and registration can be found here.
